Aura Energy | Power management for spacecraft

The problem What it does Who it is for About Contact

One system. Every source.

The power management controller that lets one spacecraft run any mix of sources: solar, battery, radioisotope, and externally supplied power.

The problem

Spacecraft power sources don’t talk to each other.

Solar arrays, batteries, radioisotope generators, and externally supplied power each carry their own voltage, timing, and failure behavior. Most power systems today are wired for one source at a time.

That was tolerable when a spacecraft ran one source and a predictable load. It is not tolerable now. Payload demand is climbing, duty cycles are rising, and the set of available sources is widening faster than the systems meant to manage them. Each new source arrives as another bespoke integration, and the constraint moves from the source to the layer that is supposed to arbitrate between them.

What it does

One controller, every power source.

01

Source-agnostic arbitration

Coordinates solar, battery, radioisotope, and externally supplied power through a single control layer, so adding a source doesn’t mean re-engineering the bus.

02

Real-time load balancing

Continuously matches supply against subsystem demand, shifting priority as conditions change across an orbit or a mission phase.

03

A record you can verify

The controller keeps a record of how power was managed across a mission, in a form mission assurance can review rather than take on trust.

Why Aura

What this changes for your program.

01

Add a source without redesigning the bus

Aura is built so that introducing or changing a power source is an integration and configuration exercise, not a redesign of the power bus and not a new controller program.

02

Built to hand to your integration team

Your engineers get what they need to size and test the integration against your own vehicle, without needing access to our core.

03

Additive, never load-bearing

Aura’s supplemental capabilities are designed so that losing any one of them degrades the system to a defined safe state, and never takes the spacecraft’s baseline power management with it.

Who it is for

LEO constellations

Fleet-scale power management, where designing a controller per vehicle does not scale. One controller across the fleet, configured per mission.

Defense space

Programs that need a reviewable account of how power was managed, and a controller that degrades to a defined safe state under fault.

Source and service providers

If you build a power source or sell power as a service, Aura is the controller layer your customers integrate against. We do not build a competing source.

About

Aura Energy

Aura Energy builds the control layer for spacecraft power. Our work is the software and system architecture that decides, in real time, how a spacecraft uses whatever power it has.

Why we started

Every spacecraft power system in service today was designed around the sources that vehicle happened to carry. That was a reasonable choice when a mission had one source and a predictable load. It stops being reasonable when a program wants to add a source, run a higher duty cycle, or field a hundred vehicles that ought to behave the same way.

The gap is not in the sources. New ways of generating and delivering power in space are reaching the market steadily. The gap is in the layer above them, which is still rebuilt from scratch for every vehicle. Aura exists to make that layer a product rather than a program cost.

Rick Gruenhagen, Founder and CEO

Rick has spent about thirty years in software and connected hardware, including chief technology roles through three company exits with a combined value above $2.2 billion, among them Innovyze, acquired by Autodesk. At Spireon he was chief technology officer through the design and production of the company’s own embedded devices, shipped at volume into fleet, trailer, and automotive electrical environments. He served as a Naval Flight Officer and as Assistant Professor of Naval Science at MIT, and holds an MS in Computer Systems Engineering from Boston University. He wrote Aura’s patent and its product architecture, and his job now is building the team to execute on it.

Aura is founder-led and hiring. If you have taken a power or control system from architecture to working hardware and want to do it again on a small team, we would like to hear from you.
